The theme of this cross is the idea of something ‘uncontained’. The cross has pairs: Taurus' electrical storm pairs with Aquarius' thunderstorm—thunder being the sound of lightning (electricity) splitting the air. A lightning strike is the discharge of friction built up within or between clouds, striking for earth. If anyone is directly under the lightning, the thunder is ear-splitting. For anyone further away, the sound of thunder timed after seeing the lightning indicates how far away one is from the lightning strike.
As the Taurus symbol describes an electrical storm, rather than a lightning storm, the image could also describe a novelty plasma globe. Despite containing electricity safely, the globe cannot restrain all the effects of electrical discharge, such as the static that raises our hair to stand on end.
Aquarius’ thunderstorm is unexpected—what is our reaction to the unexpected? We are caught, surprised; for both the receiver and transmitter of thunder. When you are in it, there is no ignoring it.
The other half of the cross describes uncontainable phenomena—the Leo epidemic that has spread rather than quarantined, the literal Scorpio container broken and spilling a perfume that spreads in both liquid and gas form—the perfume scent, like thunder, letting anyone further away know that something has split/spilt.
Mumps involve painful swelling of the parotid salivary glands which are on both sides of the face, close to the ear—possibly in response to Aquarius’ thunderstorm. Leo's symbol seems the odd one out as the ‘uncontained’ biological contagion, while the other symbols share the sense of an uncontained energy.
Scorpio’s perfume has a strong olfactory effect, Aquarius’ thunderstorm has a strong audio effect, Taurus’ electrical storm has visual and kinaesthetic effects while Leo’s epidemic has a strong biological and social effect.
