13-14 Aries/Cancer/Libra/Capricorn cross

  • Aries: A Serpent Coiling Near A Man And A Woman.
  • Cancer: A Very Old Man Facing A Vast Dark Space To The

                    Northeast.

  • Libra: A Noon Siesta.

  • Capricorn: An Ancient Bas-Relief Carved In Granite.

The theme of the cross is simply Sleep, Meditation, and Rest varying from short-term to permanent.

Is Aries' serpent coiling to sleep or to strike?  If to sleep, it resonates with Libra’s noon siesta opposite.  Serpents also represent transmutation due to the shedding of skin: change; regeneration.  It could symbolize the primal Kundalini energy that originates at the base of the spine, a form of spiritual and energetic awakening that feels like electricity.  Aries’ symbol, with its man, woman and coiling snake, indicate how temporary our lives are.

In Feng Shui the northeast means knowledge, relaxation, contemplation and spirituality.  Cancer's old man, having lived a long time, readily faces relaxation, contemplation and spirituality.  The vast dark space recalls the void, from which we were born and into which we die, and has the sense of comforting rest, perhaps for eventual regeneration.

Libra's siesta is a temporary rest when the sun is highest in the sky and can represent bodily circadian rhythms that ebb and flow.  We siesta to get energy for the rest of the day.

Capricorn's bas-relief is the only symbol of permanence, like carving ‘I was here’ just as stone is used for graves.  Bas-reliefs depict events carved into stone as a record that is likely to survive for many generations.  It's evidence of the past holds the story.

All the symbols fit well into the theme of rest (meditation, sleep, the past) and make interesting pairs: Cancer's long view looking forward to contemplation compared to Capricorn's long view to the past, and the temporary states of siesta in Libra and coiling to rest in Aries.  The latter two symbols encourage rest to re-energize.
